Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 13, 2026

Your privacy matters to us. MacCare is designed with a privacy-first approach. Your files and personal data stay on your Mac — we don't collect, transmit, or store your filesystem data on external servers.

Local-First All scans run on-device
No File Upload Files never leave your Mac
No Tracking No third-party ad trackers

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Information We Do NOT Collect

MacCare does not collect or access:

  • Contents of your files, documents, photos, or media.
  • Filenames, file paths, or directory structures.
  • Passwords, credentials, or authentication tokens.
  • Clipboard content (Clipboard History feature stores data only locally on your device).
  • Browsing history or website data.
  • Keystrokes or screen recordings.

1.2 Information Collected Locally (On-Device Only)

The following data is processed and stored only on your Mac and is never transmitted:

  • File metadata: File sizes, modification dates, and file type extensions for scan analysis.
  • SHA-256 hashes: Used for duplicate detection. Only computed locally, never shared.
  • Scan history: Records of past scans stored locally for your reference.
  • Cleanup history: Records of file operations for undo capability.
  • Clipboard history: Stored locally with optional encryption for sensitive items.
  • Folder snapshots: Local snapshots for change tracking.
  • Settings & preferences: Your app configuration stored in UserDefaults.
  • Security-scoped bookmarks: macOS bookmark data for folder access persistence.

1.3 Information Collected by Third-Party Services

MacCare integrates with the following third-party services that may collect limited data:

Service Data Collected Purpose
Apple App Store Purchase history, Apple ID Subscription management & billing
RevenueCat Anonymous subscriber ID, purchase events Subscription analytics & entitlement management
Firebase Analytics Anonymous usage events, device type, OS version App performance & crash reporting
Firebase Crashlytics Crash logs, device info, stack traces Identifying and fixing app crashes

These services use anonymized identifiers and do not have access to your files or personal data. You can review their privacy policies:

  • Apple Privacy Policy
  • RevenueCat Privacy Policy
  • Firebase Privacy Policy

2. How We Use Information

The limited data we collect through third-party services is used to:

  • Process and manage your subscription.
  • Identify and fix app crashes and bugs.
  • Understand general usage patterns to improve the app (e.g., which features are most used).
  • Ensure app compatibility across macOS versions.

We never use your data for advertising, sell your data to third parties, or create personal profiles.

3. Permissions & System Access

MacCare requests the following macOS permissions. Each is optional and can be revoked at any time:

Permission Why It's Needed What It Accesses
Full Disk Access Comprehensive filesystem scanning Read-only access to file metadata (sizes, dates, types)
Security-Scoped Access User-selected folder access Only folders you explicitly grant
Notifications Smart alerts & scan completion None — only sends notifications
Network Access Network scanner & speed test Local network device discovery, speed test servers
Admin Privileges S.M.A.R.T. disk health data Read-only disk health attributes

4. Data Storage & Security

4.1 Local Storage

All app data is stored locally on your Mac using:

  • UserDefaults: App settings and preferences.
  • Application Support directory: Scan history, cleanup history, snapshots.
  • Security-scoped bookmarks: Encrypted by macOS for folder access.

4.2 Clipboard Security

The Clipboard History feature includes:

  • Sensitive content detection: Automatically identifies passwords, API keys, and OTPs.
  • Encryption: Optional encryption for clipboard entries containing sensitive data.
  • Private mode: Pauses clipboard monitoring entirely when activated.
  • Local only: Clipboard data is never transmitted or synced externally.

4.3 Data Retention

  • Scan history is retained locally until you manually clear it.
  • Cleanup history is retained for undo capability.
  • Clipboard history can be cleared at any time via Settings.
  • Uninstalling MacCare removes all locally stored data.

5. Cloud Storage Scanning

MacCare's Cloud Storage feature can scan iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive folders. Important details:

  • Scanning only accesses files already synced to your local Mac.
  • No direct API connections are made to cloud services.
  • Only file metadata (size, type, name) is analyzed — file contents are not read.
  • SHA-256 hashes for duplicate detection are computed locally.

6. Network Features

6.1 Network Scanner

The Network Scanner discovers devices on your local network using TCP scanning. It does not transmit any data outside your local network. Device information (IP, MAC address, open ports) is stored only locally.

6.2 Network Speed Test

Speed tests connect to external speed test servers to measure your internet connection. Only connection performance data is exchanged — no personal information is transmitted.

7. Children's Privacy

MacCare is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

8. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

  • Access: Request information about what data we process.
  • Deletion: Request deletion of your data (for third-party service data).
  • Opt-out: Disable analytics by contacting us.
  • Portability: Export your locally stored data.
  • Revoke permissions: Remove app permissions at any time via macOS System Settings.

Since most data is stored locally, you have direct control over it. Simply uninstalling MacCare removes all local data.

9. International Users

MacCare is available worldwide. Third-party analytics data may be processed in regions where our service providers operate (primarily the United States). By using MacCare, you consent to this processing. All processing complies with applicable data protection regulations including GDPR and CCPA where applicable.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of MacCare after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy. We will notify users of material changes through the App.
